Communicating with your Child

Early talk is essential for every child’s development, helping to build strong foundations for language, learning, and social skills. Young children thrive when they have lots of opportunities for real conversation, face‑to‑face interaction, and time to hear and use rich vocabulary in everyday situations. Families can support this by limiting screen time, putting phones aside during shared moments, and prioritising activities that encourage talking, such as reading together, playing, and chatting about daily routines. Simple habits like making eye contact, talking about what you’re doing, and giving your child time to respond can have a big impact.

For busy parents, small changes go a long way—talk in the car, chat while cooking, use bath time for naming and describing, or spend even a few minutes device‑free before bedtime. By building these short, meaningful interactions into everyday life, we can all help children develop strong communication skills from the very start.
