Nominations for Parent Governors

The governing body of your academy has one parent governor vacancy and is looking for parents who are interested in this role and who have children at the academy.  The term ‘parent’ relates to any person who has ‘parental responsibility’ as defined by the Children Act 1989.  If you have any queries about your eligibility as a ‘parent’, please contact me for further advice.

The governing body is looking for parents who have the skills required to contribute to effective governance and the success of the academy. Your skills may include personal attributes, qualities and capabilities, such as the ability and willingness to learn and develop new skills.

Staff Governor Nomination Form

The Governing Body
Since September 2014, the law requires that governors are appointed on a skills basis,  to ensure they are prepared for the rigours and demands that the role of a governor entails. There is training available on many subjects such as governor induction, financial training etc from both the Local Authority and other organisations to support the skills needed to be effective in the role.
Governors need to have knowledge and understanding of how the school operates and to do this they are expected to  attend training events, meetings and visits to the school as and when required.

It should be noted all governing body members are voluntary members and give their time freely.

The role of the governing body:-

  • Is to provide a strategic overview of the school by establishing a vision and setting purpose and aims of the school.
  • Is to monitor and evaluate the work of the school by reviewing the performance of the head teacher, progress towards targets set and the effectiveness of school improvement strategy.
  • Is to oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money well spent.

When do we meet?

The law requires that the full governing body meet at least three times a year, one meeting each term, but as matters arise governors can be required to attend further full governing body meetings.
To ensure we fulfil the role of the governing body we find the most effective way is to meet as sub committees before meeting as a full governing body.
These are :-

  • Accountability Panel 1 -  Strategic Development of the school and pupils.
  • Accountability Panel 2 -  Finance and Personnel issues.

These committees meet each term before the full governing body meeting so that proposals made at committee stage can be put forward and discussed and adopted.

We also have other working parties such as the pay and appraisal committee, which meets annually that further support the work we do.
